Mustangs can claim title with a victory over Wylie

James Clift

Sweetwater’s 10-5 victory at Monahans clinched the baseball team’s first playoff berth in nine years.
The Mustangs can reach another goal — winning a district championship — with a victory over Wylie on Saturday afternoon.
The game begins at 1 p.m. and will be played at Sweet-water’s Sportsman’s Park. The Mustangs — who are 7-1 this season to Wylie’s 6-2 — will start James Clift (4-0 in district play) on the mound. Clift, who also plays second base, homered to start a six-run seventh and catcher Sean Morrow added a bases-loaded double in the win over Monahans that was the Mustangs’ fourth straight. A win over Wylie would clinch the 4-3A title for Sweetwater, which has one game left next Friday against Snyder. But a Wylie win would put the teams in a tie for the district lead — and by beating Sweetwater in both games, Wylie would own the tiebreaker to decide the No. 1 district seed.
Sweetwater vs. Wylie also takes place Saturday in soft-ball — also at 1 p.m. — in the finale for both teams at Jerry Collins Complex. The Lady Mustangs face Pecos in the playoffs next week.
