Sweetwater Mustang varsity baseball began its season on Tuesday night

Sweetwater never trailed in its season-opening base-ball game Tuesday at San Angelo Lake View, but was unable to put the Chiefs away as darkness forced the teams to settle for a 7-7 tie at the end of seven innings.
Sweetwater jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning Tuesday before Lake View came to bat, and also led 5-2 after a three-run fourth and 7-5 after a two-run sixth, only to see its advantage disappear each time.
Sweetwater didn’t get a hit until its three-run fourth when Dylan Bennett, Bran-don Howell and James Clift singled, with Clift getting an RBI. Steven May singled in the sixth and scored on Sean Morrow’s double, and Morrow scored on a passed ball. Kaleb Hoover pitched the first three innings, with Howell going 1 2/3 and Gabriel Medellin hurling the last 2 1/3.
Sweetwater is back at San Angelo Lake View on Thurs-day to play in the Chiefs’ three-day tournament that has a round-robin format. The Mustangs play their first game at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, then play twice on Friday with a final game on Saturday.
