After 4 1/2 innings of Tuesday’s game, it looked as if the visiting San Angelo Lake View baseball team might literally walk to victory over Sweetwater in its 2011 season opener at Newman Park.
The Chiefs had just three hits, all singles, at that point, but they led 5-3 thanks primarily to 11 walks — four of them coming with the bases loaded.
But then Lake View opened the door to a Sweetwater rally, and the Mustangs pushed across five late runs to pull out an 8-5 victory.
A passed ball following a strikeout and then a walk in the bottom of the fifth set the stage for Cameron Fox’s two-run double that tied the game at 5. Then Sweetwater got RBI hits in the sixth by Connor Stafford, Sean Morrow and Fox to score what proved to be the winning runs. The winning pitcher was Gabriel Medellin, who after walking in two runs quickly settled down and finished with seven strikeouts, while allowing only one hit, over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Sweetwater took an early 2-0 lead, but starting pitcher Kris Mayes could not hold it and was lifted after walking seven batters in 2 2/3 innings, al-though he fanned six.
Lake View led 3-2 after scoring three runs in the third, and regained the lead (5-3) with two bases-loaded walks in the fifth until Sweetwater rallied.
Fox had three hits and Willie Norman, Morrow and Tanner Crain two as Sweetwater out-hit Lake View 12-4. The JV also won, 4-3, in its opener as pitcher Brandon Howell allowed six hits and struck out five to get the victory. Kaleb Hoover belted a two-run triple that tied the game at 2 in the fifth inning, while Cole Maxwell had two hits and, after a leadoff single in the sixth, scored to break a 3-3 tie. Starting Friday, the varsity plays at Lake View’s tournament and the JV has its tournament at Big Spring.
