Mustangs fall to Bangs; girls lose, too

December 17, 2011

One played at home while the other played on the road, and their opponents weren’t the same either.
But Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams did share a few things in common on Friday. Both played schools from the same Class 2A district (3-2A) whose names start with a ‘B’ — and both lost.
Sweetwater’s boys (5-10) played host to Bangs and fell by a score of 58-46. The girls (9-9), meanwhile, went to Ballinger and were beaten 55-37, ending their three-game winning streak.
Kaleb Hoover scored 17 and Taylor Jones added 10 for the boys. But it wasn’t enough to stay with Bangs, which went ahead for good (12-11) at the end of the opening quarter and built a double-digit lead with a 9-0 fourth-quarter run that put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
Hoover also had eight rebounds and six steals. Gabe Medellin had a team-high 11 rebounds as well as five points, while Tino Martinez, Anthony Palacios and Patrick Palacios had four points and Dylan Ben-nett two for the Mustangs.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater’s girls also fell behind early as they played Ballinger for the second time this month. Two weeks earlier, they had faced Ballinger at a weekend tournament which the Lady Cats hosted and lost a second-round game 56-43.
This time, Sweetwater trailed Ballinger by double digits (17-7) after one quarter and by 14, 27-13, at halftime. Kinsey Browning had 10 points, Kendra Crosson nine, Candice Hernandez five, Shelby Cason and Kel-si Crosson four, Hayley Brownlow three and Kath-leen Campbell two, and Kendra Crosson grabbed 14 rebounds as well. The girls will host Colorado City and the boys go there Tuesday.
