Sweetwater varsity baseball recap

WALL — After a bad start, Sweetwater’s baseball team threatened to pull off a big comeback in the sixth in-ning of Friday’s final non-district game at Wall.
The Mustangs used an error, walk, infield single, groundball out and a double steal to score a couple of runs and cut the Hawks’ lead to 7-4, and back-to-back walks after that loaded the bases.
But a groundball out ended the threat, and Wall then came up with six runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Sweetwater 13-4.
It was a discouraging fin-ish for the Mustangs, who have been outscored 26-6 in two losses this week as they prepare for Tuesday’s Dis-trict 5-3A opener against Wylie at Newman Park. Sweetwater fell to .500 (6-6-1) with Friday’s defeat.
Wall scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-1 lead, but then managed only one more over the next three frames as Sweetwater tried to fight its way back.
A single by Willie Norman in the second inning scored the Mustangs’ first run, and a solo homer by Ryan Linebaugh cut it to 6-2 in the third inning. Stephen May hit a bases-loaded groundball to score the third run, and he and Quentin Wetsel executed a double steal later in the sixth inning with Wetsel scoring from third.
Sweetwater managed just four hits, two from Norman and one each by Linebaugh and Dylan Bennett. Greg Aiken started on the mound but was replaced by Bran-don Howell, who threw five innings until James Clift got the last three outs.
