Playoff chances dim after 4th straight loss

Andres Facio’s 27 points led No. 25 Monahans past Sweetwater 56-41 on Tues-day, giving the Mustangs their fourth straight loss in district play.
Sweetwater (1-5) got 13 points from Dylan Bennett but no other Mustangs was able to hit double figures against the Loboes (5-1).
Sweetwater came out hot, as Bennett’s 3-pointer gave the team an early 9-4 lead over Monahans (23-4 over-all). The Mustangs (12-5 overall) held on to the lead until the 1:59 mark of the period when Facio hit two free throws for an 11-9 ad-vantage. Sweetwater tied it on two Kaleb Hoover free throws, but the roof caved in soon afterward.
Monahans took a 14-11 lead when Lucas Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer to end the quarter. That sparked a big run by the Loboes, who out-scored Sweetwater 18-4 in the second period to take a commanding 32-15 lead at the intermission.
The Mustangs staged a rally to cut Monahans’ lead from 21 to 12 points in the third quarter, until Facio scored his team’s first seven points of the fourth period to stretch the lead back to 17 (51-34) with 4:08 left and essentially ice the game.
Monahans also got 13 points from Junior Morales, who along with Facio had scored 21 points four nights earlier in a 79-72 loss to No. 5 Wylie (6-0). The Bulldogs kept their one-game lead with a 65-51 win over Big Spring. The Steers (3-3) are now tied with Midland Greenwood for third place. Both are two games ahead of Sweetwater in the 4-3A standings, with just four games left in the season.
Hoover finished with nine points. J.C. Poe and Rhett Torres each had six, while Marquees Jenkins had four and Michael Hunt three for the Mustangs. Sweetwater likely needs to win three of its last four — starting at Snyder (0-6) on Friday — to have a playoff shot. It plays just one more home game — vs. Big Spring on Feb. 7.
