Mayes no-hits Steers

Though it is still strug-gling to score runs, Sweet-water’s baseball team final-ly has its first district win — thanks to the performance of its most reliable starting pitcher here Tuesday.
Senior Kris Mayes, in fact, hurled the second no-hitter of his high school career in a 3-2 win over Big Spring as the Mustangs (1-3) pulled out of a last-place tie with the Steers and kept their playoff hopes alive.
Mayes struck out 14, including the last two batters after Big Spring (0-4) had scored on a walk, hit batsman and error to cut Sweetwater’s lead to 3-2 and put runners at second and third with one out.
Sweetwater finished with seven hits, the last one a Connor Stafford RBI single that scored Austin Burt with what proved to be the winning run in the sixth inning. Burt came in as a courtesy runner for Sean Morrow, who was hit by a pitch fol-lowing a one-out double by Ryan Linebaugh. Burt went to second after Greg Aiken reached on a fielder’s choice on a ball where Linebaugh was thrown out at third.
Sweetwater also scored in the second and fourth innings to go up 2-1. A bases-loaded single by Morrow produced the first run, and Linebaugh scored Cameron Fox with the go-ahead run on an outfield fly that was dropped by Big Spring’s left fielder. Sweetwater can pull into a third-place tie by beating Wylie (2-2) in its final home game Friday.
