The Sweetwater boys got into their first victory of the year by defeating Ballinger, 51-45, here Monday in the second half of a boys-girls doubleheader that involved three schools. The Mustangs are now 1-1 heading into the Thanksgiving break.
The Sweetwater girls did not fare as well, losing to Early 54-35 as they fell to 3-2 overall. Both teams will return to action Nov. 27 as the girls host Abernathy and the boys travel to Wall.
SW boys 51, Ballinger boys 45
Down by three points af-ter the first two periods, the Mustangs got rolling in the second half. They were up 42-39 heading into the third quarter and held on with a strong defensive effort as they limited the Bearcats to just 15 points over the last two quarters of play.
Sweetwater found itself in an early 7-2 hole, and still trailed 30-27 at halftime before finally gaining the upper hand in the third period against Ballinger.
Sweetwater went ahead to stay (42-39) on Rhett Torresâ€™ two free throws and a basket by Deandre Gatson to end the quarter, and Cole Maxwell made a 3-pointer to complete the run. Sweet-water led just 47-45 with 4:13 to play, but the defense didnâ€™t allow another point while the Mustangs added to their lead on a 3-pointer by Michael Hunt and free throw by Dylan Bennett.
Sweetwater was able to get scoring from all eight of its players who suited up as Maxwell scored 10 points, Bennett nine, Torres eight, Gatson seven, Isaiah McGee and Quentin Wetsel six, Hunt three and Sean Morrow two. Maxwell, Gat-son, Hunt and McGee com-bined to hit six 3-pointers.
Early girls 54, Sweetwater girls 35
Sweetwater never got un-tracked offensively vs. Early and the Lady Mustangs had just four points in the fourth quarter. It was the second straight loss for Sweetwater after a 3-0 start.
Sweetwater trailed 32-20 at halftime and needed a 6-0 run to get within 10, 41-31, after three periods.
Early never trailed, open-ing an 8-2 lead in the first 2 1/2 minutes en route to taking a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Early hit five 3-pointers, three of them in the opening period, to Sweetwaterâ€™s one.
Sweetwater was led by Shelby Casonâ€™s 13 points. The Lady Mustangs also got seven points from Kendra Crosson, four from Kelsi Crosson and Taylor McPherson, three from Elise Lawrence and two from Suede Shirley and Janell Walker. Lawrence hit the teamâ€™s only three-pointer.
