It wasn’t easy, or pretty, but the Sweetwater boys basketball team did just enough things right against Breckenridge to finally end a five-game losing streak here Thursday.
After blowing an eight-point halftime lead, Sweet-water (5-6) scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to break a 26-26 tie and still led by five, 36-31, with two minutes left. But the win wasn’t secure until one of Breckenridge’s players missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds.
Taylor Jones and Paxton Kelley had 10 points to pace Sweetwater, which led 18-10 at halftime and 19-10 early in the third until Brecken-ridge rallied to take a pair of one-point leads late in the period. The Bucks made all four of their 3-pointers during a 16-7 rally that tied the game entering the fourth quarter, but Jones hit a trey that put Sweetwater up for good, 29-26, with 7:46 left.
“It was ugly, but at least it’s a win,” said Sweetwater coach Al Hunt, whose team is back on the road to face a good Bangs squad Friday. “They got hot in the third quarter and we didn’t come out far enough to defend, but we got it together enough to get a win.”
Ryan Mercer scored six points, Dylon Adames five, B.J. Walker three and Gabriel Medellin two.
All three boys teams won Tuesday, as the freshmen prevailed 51-30 and the JV edged Breckenridge 31-27.
Kaleb Hoover scored 17 points to pace the freshmen while Dylan Bennett had seven, Jonathan Browning and Tre Taylor six, Deandre Gatson and Marquees Jen-kins four, Michael Hazard three and Michael McCoy and Quentin Wetsel two. Kyle McSherry had 12 and Nick Nemir 11 for the JV, and Ryan Linebaugh and Cole Maxwell scored four.
