It won’t be Game 7 of the World Series, but the stakes for tonight’s game between Sweetwater and Brownwood at Mustang Bowl — which is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. — will be just about as high.
It’s the season finale for Sweetwater (1-2, 4-5), which must beat Brownwood to have a shot at claiming a playoff berth for the first time since 2008. The Lions come in at 1-1, 5-3 and still have a game with Wylie to end their regular season.
Snyder and Wylie, who are both 2-0 in district, will play tonight in Wylie for the outright 5-3A lead.
If Sweetwater can win to-night’s game by 10 points or more, the Mustangs will be in the playoffs no matter what happens next week. If Sweetwater and Wylie both win tonight, it would eliminate Brownwood from the postseason. If Sweetwater and Snyder win, Brownwood would have to beat Wylie to create a three-way tie for second place that would be decided by the district’s tiebreaker. Sweetwater can still make the playoffs if the Mustangs beat Brownwood by less than 10 points, as-suming that Wylie also wins one of its final two games.
Snyder and Brownwood clinch playoff spots with wins tonight. Beating Wylie would also clinch the No. 1 seed for Snyder because of head-to-head victories over Brownwood and Wylie, in case of a two-way tie.
“Our fate is in our hands,” said Sweetwater coach Craig Slaughter on Wednesday.
“The kids have worked hard and they deserve it,” said the third-year Mustang coach. “We don’t care who we play, we just want to play some playoff football.”
Also tonight, Roscoe hosts Ralls in District 7-1A, while in six-man action, Highland travels to Aspermont and Blackwell will be going to Paint Rock, all at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe (0-8) has just two more chances to avoid a winless 2011 season and is 0-3 in district, while Ralls (2-1) can clinch a playoff spot with a win thanks to its victory over Roby (1-2). Crosbyton and Hamlin, who are both 3-0, currently share the district lead and the teams play each other in Crosbyton tonight.
Highland, which is 0-1 in District 6 Six-Man Div. I after losing to Ira in its opener, must win its last two games to have any chance of making the playoffs.
But the Hornets face an Aspermont team that is 8-0 after crushing Hermleigh 64-6 last week. Blackwell (1-0) is currently tied with Paint Rock for the lead in District 8 Six-Man Division II, thanks to a 1-0 forfeit win over Novice that was the first of the year for the Hornets. Paint Rock is coming off a 54-6 win in its opener with Panther Creek. The winner of tonight’s game will take the outright lead in the district and also clinch a playoff spot with one game to play.
