Three Nolan County high school boys basketball teams get to play the role of spoiler when they end their regular seasons today, although one of them still has a shot at advancing to the postseason playoffs.
Sweetwater (0-7 in Dis-trict 5-3A, 6-21 overall) will try to avoid a winless district slate when it entertains Snyder at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs can also deny the Tigers (2-5) any chance at reaching the playoffs with a victory. Snyder trails Brownwood (3-4) by a game in the battle for the third-place berth from District 5-3A. Snyder’s only hope is to beat Sweetwater while Brownwood also loses to first-place Wylie (7-0). That would create a tie between Brownwood and Snyder and force a play-in game later this week to decide the No. 3 team. Big Spring (6-2) has secured the No. 2 spot.
Sweetwater hasn’t seen action since losing 51-23 at Brownwood last Tuesday.
Blackwell’s boys, 3-10 in District 12-A, Division II, will have their hands full as they finish at No. 1-ranked Bronte, which leads the district at 13-0.
Highland’s boys, 4-7 in District 11-A, Division II, also have a tall assignment today. The Hornets go to 9-2 Roby, already assured of a playoff spot as the district’s No. 2 team behind first-place Ira (11-0). To have a shot at the playoffs as the No. 3 team, Highland must win today and get a couple of other things to happen in order to force a four-way tie at the end of the regular season and create a play-in scenario. Trent (4-7) must beat Loraine (4-6) today, and Loraine must then defeat Hermleigh (5-6) this Friday in order for the four-way deadlock to become a reality.
