With just a week left until the season opener against Eastland on Aug. 31 at the Sammy Baugh Classic, Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley is hop-ing to get a good evaluation of his team in todayâs final scrimmage against San Angelo Lake View at the Chiefsâ stadium.
Though it will be played primarily under a controlled format, the scrimmage â which begins at approximately 6:30 p.m. after the freshman and JV teams scrimmage at 5 â will more closely resemble what fans can expect to see once the season begins.
Mobley said the format calls for each teamâs No. 1 units to have a 15-play series on offense and defense and the No. 2 units to each have a 10-play series. The scrim-mage will then end with a âlive quarterâ that is expec-ted to closely resemble an actual game, although de-fensive blitzes and rushing on punt attempts will not be allowed.
With a number of ques-tions still to be answered, Mobley looks at tonightâs scrimmage as a âhigh inten-sity practiceâ in which he hopes to reach a final deci-sion on the teamâs starters and primary backups.
âYou want to have a good showing,â he said Wed-nesday in discussing the scrimmage.
âBut at the same time, itâs an evaluation of your players to see how weâre advancing to prepare for the season. The biggest thing (for tonight) is going to be our execution on offense and defense and moving the ball. On defense, Iâd like to see better tackling out there. Iâd like to see the intensity step up.â
And, Mobley said, heâs looking for âstandoutsâ to emerge at the scrimmage.
âWe had some missed open tackles last week, but thatâs common for this time of year,â he said, noting that the team is already turning its focus to Eastland.
Preseason scrimmages are also scheduled today at Highland and Blackwell as both sets of Hornets pre-pare for their season openers next week. Highland will host Garden City starting at 6 p.m., while Blackwell will take on both Veribest and Loop at Blackwellâs field.
Highland will travel to Jayton for a 6 p.m. game against Motley County to begin its season Aug. 31. Meanwhile, Blackwell hosts Westbrook in its opener.
Roscoe was scheduled to play its final scrimmage on Thursday at Hawley. The Plowboys will kick off their season as well as the Sammy Baugh Classic when they face De Leon Aug. 30.
