Hoping to pull back into a first-place tie with a bounceback win here Friday, the Sweetwater baseball team suffered another defeat in-stead.
They also had a season-low two hits, both coming on back-to-back singles in the second inning, along with five errors.
Yet the Mustangs, who never led, kept it interesting until the end at Sportsman’s Park before losing, 4-3, to Wylie in a key District 4-3A game for both teams.
Wylie (4-0) out-hit the Mustangs 7-2, but Sweet-water (2-2) took advantage of its few offensive opportunities to stay within strik-ing distance.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, the Mustangs tied it in the bottom of the inning without getting a hit. Dylan Bennett led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and fielder’s choice and scored when Greg Aiken reached on an error. James Clift also scored on Kaleb Hoover’s bases-loaded RBI ground ball. But Wylie went up 3-2 in the third inning on a walk, passed ball, single and sacrifice fly and also scored in the fifth on a walk, out-field error and RBI single.
Despite not managing a single hit after Bennett and Isaiah McGee singled in the second inning, Sweetwater scored after a Wylie error in the sixth inning on a throw that got past third base and brought in Hoover. He had drawn a one-out walk and been sacrificed to second before scoring on the error.
Sweetwater fell to third place in District 4-3A with the loss as Snyder (3-1) took over outright second by de-feating Greenwood, 6-3, on Friday. Sweetwater hosts Snyder when it returns to action on Friday. J.P. Poe, despite allowing just one earned run in six innings, took the loss against Wylie.
