Sweetwater showed noticeable improvement in last week’s opening scrimmage at Lubbock Cooper when compared to the previous year’s result, battling the Pirates to a 1-1 standoff, but the team’s No. 1 offense was unable to score points.
Coach Craig Slaughter is hoping for a breakthrough in that area when the Mus-tangs host San Angelo Lake View tonight in their final scrimmage. The JV White and Red squads both scrimmage at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Slaughter is also hoping to eliminate “silly mistakes” — penalties and turnovers — which helped keep the Mustangs from getting into the end zone last week except for a 70-yard touchdown burst by sophomore Marquees Jenkins. He still gave the offense a B-minus while awarding the defense a B-plus or A-minus after allowing just one Lubbock Cooper touchdown.
Tonight’s format will have the No. 1 units running 15 plays and the No. 2’s 12, followed by a “live half” with two 12-minute quarters that will be played under game-type conditions except for punting and kickoffs. Fans will be asked to contribute a $1 donation as part of “Our Day To Shine.”
