After the big news of Thursday's University Interscholastic League realignment which has placed Sweetwater in District 4-3A for the next two years, Sweetwater head football coach Craig Slaughter has announced a tentative 2012 football schedule which will include some familiar and not-so-familar rivals in non-district play.
The first two 2012 games are at home starting Aug. 31 against Class 2A Eastland, which will be part of the annual Sammy Baugh Classic at Mustang Bowl. Sweetwater will host Class 3A Andrews on Sept. 7, but the last three non-district games will be on the road starting with another 2A team, Wall, on Sept. 14. Sweetwater then travels to Breckenridge on Sept. 21 and Brownwood Sept. 28, followed by a bye Oct. 5 to give players extra time to get ready for the District 4-3A portion of the schedule. Brownwood has been in Sweetwater's district the past four years, and Breckenridge was in the district many years before falling to 2A.
It’s back home for the district opener on Oct. 12 as the Mustangs host Snyder. Sweetwater also hosts Greenwood Oct. 19, goes to Big Spring Oct. 26, then returns home Nov. 2 to entertain Monahans before finally wrapping up its District 4-3A schedule on the road Nov. 9 at Wylie.
