Sweetwater’s 8-6 victory over Pampa on Saturday at Lubbock Christian Univer-sity marked a new milestone for the baseball program, and matched another.
The win completed a two-game sweep for the Mustangs (19-14) in the teams’ best-of-3 area playoff, and advanced them to the regional quarterfinals for only the third time since the program was resumed back in 1988 following a 23-year absence.
This year’s team, however, is the first to ever win more than one playoff series.
The 1994 and 2003 teams also made it to the regional quarterfinals. But as district champions, they were given first-round byes and each won just their area round playoff series before being eliminated.
The only other playoff series won by Sweetwater came in 2002 and 2004, when the Mustangs were bi-district champs. The other district championship was in 1992, when Sweetwater got a first-round bye but lost in the area playoffs. The Mustangs were in Class 4A in both ‘92 and ‘94 before dropping down to 3A starting with the 2001 season.
Sweetwater is back at LCU on Friday to begin a best-of-3 regional quarterfinal with Andrews (see schedule below), as it tries to become the first team to win three playoff series and make it to the regional semifinals.
