Mustangs tied for 4th after defeating Big Spring

February 10, 2014

The stage is set for a winner-take-all, regular-season ending showdown Tuesday at Midland Greenwood to decide the No. 4 and final boys basketball playoff spot out of District 4-3A.
Making that possible was Sweetwater’s 60-45 win on Friday over Big Spring a Mustang Gym in its final home game of the season, coupled with Greenwood’s 66-40 defeat at Monahans, leaving both teams with 3-6 records in district play.
Faced with possible elimination, Sweetwater won for the second time in three games with one of its best showings of the year. If the team can beat Greenwood, the Mustangs will qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
Trailing 13-11 after one quarter, Sweetwater rallied to outscore Big Spring 19-12 in Period 2 for a 30-25 lead at halftime.
The lead was still five, 41-36, after three periods, but Sweetwater iced the win with a 19-9 finish.
Free throws decided the game. Sweetwater hit 22 of 33, while Big Spring (5-4) shot just 12 free throws and made seven.
Dylan Bennett poured in 19 points to pace the Mus-tangs, while Kaleb Hoover scored 15 points and Michael Hunt 10. Bennett and Hoover were a collective 16- of-23 and Hunt was 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Also scoring for Sweetwater in the win were Rhett Torres with eight points, J.P. Poe with seven and De’andre Gatson with one.
Tyler Wigington had 16 points to pace Big Spring.
