The Sweetwater baseball team has wins from five different pitchers already.
Senior Gabriel Medellin became the latest when he allowed just six hits in a seven-inning complete game, in his first start of the year, on Monday. His teammates, meanwhile, had 13 hits, while scoring eight runs in the first three innings at Midland Greenwood in defeating the Rangers, 11-4.
Sweetwater had only two extra-base hits, a triple by Sean Morrow in the second inning and a double by Ryan Linebaugh in the fifth, but eight of the Mustangs’ nine batters had at least one hit in the game and seven players scored runs. Sweet-water scored in every inning but one against Greenwood and had its fifth double-digit output of the season with the start of district action still almost two weeks away. Monday’s assault made it easy for Medellin (1-0), who after being given an 8-0 lead allowed three runs in the third inning but gave up just one unearned run from then on. He struck out nine and walked four.
Stephen May went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI to lead Sweetwater’s attack against Greenwood, while three players had two hits — Dylan Bennett, Shawn Campbell and Linebaugh.
Sweetwater will travel to Abilene on Thursday for the first two of its five tournament games over three days at the Abilene High and Cooper fields. Sweetwater first plays El Paso Del Valle at 10 a.m. at Abilene High, and will then face Wichita Falls Rider at 4 p.m. at the Cooper field. The tourna-ment will end Saturday.
