Whether they wrap a bandage around a wound or calm us before surgery, nurses provide more than care when we are illâthey provide comfort. In recognition of the compassionate service nurses provide to our community, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is joining the American Nursing Association in commemorating National Nurses Week.
âEvery day, nurses bring compassion with them to work. This, in turn, is displayed through the quality of service they provide to our patients,â says Donna Boatright, chief executive officer at RPMH. âOf course, this service isnât just in our hospital, the nurses in our hospice and home health divisions provide excellent care to those recovering at home.â
Celebrated at the same time each year, National Nurses Week is rooted in the work of the professionâs most notable icon, Florence Nightingale. Often referred to as the âlady with the lamp,â Nightingale received her reputation during the Crimean War when she led a group of 38 nurses through the battleground, providing much needed services to the badly wounded British troops. As night fell, she continued her mission lighting the way with her famous lamp.
National Nurses Week begins on May 6 of each year, the anniversary of Nightingaleâs arrival in Crimea and ends on her birthday, May 12. In 1974, President Nixon declared May 6 through May 12 National Nurses Week.
âOur nursing team is one of the best that our hospital has ever had, and it reflects in our patient satisfaction scores,â said Donna Boatright, chief executive officer at RPMH. âTheir commitment to our community rivals that of any large urban hospital, and thatâs what Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital is known for.â
