Donated glasses to be distributed to needy individuals who require corrective lenses for better sight

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) in conjunction with the Sweetwater Lions Club recently held an eye glasses drive in an effort to help those less fortunate have the opportunity to see better with corrective lenses. The two groups’ efforts resulted in 97 used eye glasses being collected.
“This is the first time we held a drive for something like this and we are very pleased with the outcome,” said Mickey Williams, a registered nurse and quality director at RPMH. “Anything that we can do to help people see is an amazing thing, and knowing that our community has helped 97 people see better is pretty cool.”
Worldwide, it is estimated that 1 billion people need but do not get corrected vision. This is because, for the poor, eyeglasses often are either inaccessible or unaffordable.
The local eye glasses drive was held in October and part of a community education program on eye health, leading up to a special lunch and learn seminar on the topic at the hospital.
All of the eye glasses collected will be send to a Lions Club distribution center in Midland, where they will be inspected and prepared for disbursement to needy individuals.
