Nemir just misses 3A state medal

May 13, 2013

AUSTIN — Nick Nemir of Sweetwater ended his high school career by narrowly missing out on a Class 3A medal Saturday night at the UIL state track meet.
However, his fourth-place finish in the boys 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.36 seconds beat out both of his competitors from Region I. Wylie’s Patrick Walker and Glen Rose’s Blake Eschbach, who beat out Nemir by finishing 1-2 at the regional meet, placed sixth and seventh at state, respectively.
Celina’s Ben Thiel won Saturday’s race in 36.85, followed by Alex Fahrenthold of Rockport Fulton (38.61) and Jared Twomey of Car-thage, who took the bronze medal with a time of 39.14.
Nemir became the final 3A qualifier in his event by having the fastest time in the state among all third-place finishers in regional competition. Had he man-aged to post another 38.95 at state to equal his regional time, he would placed third and claimed a medal.
But considering where he came from at the start of the season, Nemir’s feat — he went to state for the first time Saturday — was quite an accomplishment.
“Wow! What a remarka-ble season for Nick,” said his coach, Zac Harrell. “Who would have thought back in February when he ran a 43 (second) plus at Hamlin, that he would be the fourth best hurdler in the state of Texas and the best in our region? Due to his relentless work ethic and Coach (Jake) Freeman spending hours with him every day to get him prepared, he knocked over five-tenths (of a second) off his time every week. It was awesome to see him end his high school career on the biggest stage in high school sports. We are going to miss him, but he is going to continue to do great things on the track in the next four years.”
