Nolan County Coliseum to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will have their monthly coffee event at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum, located at 1699 Cypress Street in Sweetwater. Use the East entrance to the Coliseum. The Nolan County Coliseum is a beehive of activity virtually every weekend of the year. Not only does it host the Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest annual Rattlesnake Round-Up, but it also has livestock shows, cutting horse shows, rodeos, civic events, arts and crafts shows, specialty products expositions and a variety of community events. The facilities are designed to provide for virtually any event. It is owned by Nolan County and operated by the Coliseum Board, comprised of 15 directors and on-site manager, Robert McReynolds. It is one of the main attractions in Sweetwater and about 80,000 people visit the Coliseum in a year. The Nolan County Coliseum was founded in 1959, by the Sweetwater Livestock and Fair Association. The Coliseum serves Nolan County and state-wide events and employs eight full time employees. The first event was the Nolan County Junior Livestock Show and six-county livestock shown in January 1960. In March 1960, Sweetwater the FFA state livestock show judging contest took place and on April 15, 1960, the American Junior Rodeo Association (AJRA) held their first Easter Rodeo. This rodeo will be April 24, 2011. The first National Cutting Horse Show Association show was Nov. 22, 1962. Famous visitors include Buster Welch, Phil Rapp, Roy Cooper and his sons, Cody Ohl, Trevor Brazile, Tuff Hedeman, Jimmy Powers, Suzy Luchlinger, sister of Reba McEntire, George Strait and the Harlem Globe Trotters.
