Nolan County hosting CDCAT regional meeting

April 11, 2013

The County & District Clerks' Association of Texas (CDCAT) Region III meeting will be held tomorrow, starting in the District Courtroom, which is located on the second floor of the Nolan County Courthouse.

Tomorrow, over 50 county and district clerks--elected individuals who keep track of the records in their area--will converge in Sweetwater for the County & District Clerks' Association of Texas (CDCAT) Region III meeting.
The meeting will be held in the District Courtroom, located on the second floor of the Nolan County Courthouse.
Pat McGowan and Patti Neill, the respective county and district clerk, are hosting the local meeting. The last time the regional meeting was held in Nolan County was sometime around the year 2000.
Region III makes up a vast portion of West Texas--as far west as El Paso County and as far east as Concho County. Andrews and Brewster counties--the range from north to south--are also part of Region III. Clerks from other regions, such as nearby counties like Fisher, will also attend.
With registration beginning at 8 a.m., the clerks will take part in a day-long event which includes special sessions and a keynote address which will offer updates on the 83rd Legislative Session in Texas.
Speakers include District Judge Glen Harrison, County Court at Law Judge David Hall, Bridger Anglin of Nolan County (court collections), Kim Piechowiak of Austin (Domestic Violence OCA [Office of Court Administration]), Amanda Stites of Austin (NICS - National Instant Criminal Background Check System reporting), Mary Thomas of Abilene (TABC - Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission), and Marion Posey of Austin (CJIS - Criminal Justice Information Services).
The keynote will be offered by CDCAT President Sheri Woodfin, the District Clerk of Tom Green County. Many legislative changes are currently being considered, many of which will affect the local offices as well as across the state--some in major ways.
Prior to the main session, a lunch will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The meeting will conclude with door prizes provided by a variety of local businesses and a rattlesnake demonstration by the Sweetwater Jaycees.
Regional Area meetings are held twice a year per region, with an annual Conference held in Bryan-College Station for all County/District Clerks from across the state. Friday's meeting allows the clerks to earn almost five hours of continuing education requirements; 20 hours are ordered by the state each year.
In the smaller regional setting, McGowan stated that clerks can learn about their field in a more interactive manner. By asking questions to people who have experienced similar problems, the clerks can discuss various issues and give answers to each other.
And as a result of these meetings, clerks at the county and district level can take what they learn to better serve citizens while also staying in compliance with different laws and guidelines. The public is invited to stop by the meeting to listen and learn more about the duties undertaken by clerks.
Businesses donating door prizes for the CDCAT Region III meeting include Dairy Queen, Sonic, Vickie's Gifts, The Medicine Place, K-Mart, The Flower Box, The Open Window, Ketpro, Hart, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, The Wildflower Boutique, Maloney Pharmacy, Advantage Office Supply, Elaine Curtis, Beall's, Brookshire's, Sweetwater Floral, Subway, Schlotzsky's, Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply and EDOC Technology.
Luncheon sponsors include the Law Office of James Wilks, iDocket.com, Bear Graphics, Scantiva, Jim Monkerud, Mark White-Election Systems and Software, and Fidlar Technologies. Bee's Decor is catering the lunch, while the Nolan County Coliseum will host the venue.
