Nolan County roadways remain hazardous

As of 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, all streets and roadways in Nolan County remain very hazardous.
Any and all travel, of any distance, is highly discouraged.  Nolan County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Texas DPS Troopers are overwhelmed with numerous accidents and stalled or stranded vehicles.
"All available wreckers are backlogged with numerous incidents and if a driver loses control (very likely) and gets stuck – it may be hours before a wrecker can get the vehicle back on the roadway," Said Nolan County Sheriff David Warren. "Some have been pulled out only to lose control again and slide off the roadway a short distance further down the road."
According to Warren, Interstate 20 is very treacherous all the way through Nolan County. West bound traffic is at a standstill at mile marker 252 on I-20.
"Texas Highway 70 also has numerous problems and traffic is currently at a standstill, both north and southbound, at '9 mile hill' approximately nine miles south of Sweetwater on TX Highway 70. TXDOT crew and trucks are working as hard as they can to sand roadways and trouble spots, but there is a complete underlayment of solid ice covered by 3-6 inches of sleet and snow."
"The temperature is currently 16 degrees so conditions will not improve and in fact will continue to get worse as traffic blows the loose snow off of the ice-covered road surface and the ice becomes polished by the traffic," said Warren.
"Again all travel is highly discouraged throughout Nolan County."
