Several times a year, members of the Sweetwater Police Department and the Nolan County Sheriff's Office participate in active shooter training while Sweetwater students are on vacation. Each year, the training takes place at a different school and officers train in tactical exercises on active shooter response.
The officers train two to three times a year and sometimes more. This time around, their training was done at Sweetwater High School during students' Christmas vacation. The entities have been doing this type of training for at least 18 years, according to Sweetwater Police Department's Lieutenant Randy Hanes. "The training is not a knee-jerk reaction to the Sandy Hook shootings. The course is part of continued training for all of our officers every year."
