Karry Owens, who earlier this year submitted his resignation as head football coach at Highland after 18 years, has accepted a similar job at Water Valley. His last day at Highland was on Friday.
Owens will be repla-cing Justin Esquell, who resigned after leading Water Valley to a 10-1 record this past season.
Owens’ replacement will be Jeff Shelton, who served as the head football coach at New Home the last two years. The Leopards were 5-5 in 2010. Shelton was also defensive coordinator for four years at Jayton, where he helped them reach the six-man state finals in 2006.
Shelton begins his du-ties at Highland on May 4, said school principal Duane Hyde.
Owens, a former star athlete at Highland who helped them win the first of back-to-back state titles in 1982, was also very successful as head coach as the Hornets made the playoffs on 12 occasions with just two losing seasons.
Highland won 10 or more games six times and reached the state six-man title game twice, in 2000 and 2009. In addition, the Hornets advanced to at least the state quarterfinals in four other seasons.
Owens has a career record of 172-92-3, with the vast majority of his wins at Highland.
