Pittman denies sideline access

August 26, 2011

The Sweetwater Reporter was recently denied sideline access to Sweetwater Mustang home football games by Sweetwater Independent School District Superintendent Terry Pittman.

The Sweetwater Reporter was recently denied sideline access to Sweetwater Mustang home football games by Sweetwater Independent School District Superintendent Terry Pittman. Ron Howell, sports editor for the Reporter, was contacted this past Monday by Pittman and told that the Reporter would not be allowed to have its contract photographer on the sidelines for the game. However, Pittman would not reveal the reason for this decision to Howell.
On Wednesday, Pittman also verified to Ron Midkiff, publisher of the Reporter, that access would be denied to the contract photographer. Midkiff explained to Pittman that this would put the newspaper in a bind and make it difficult to find a qualified person to help with photos for the games. Again during this conversation, Pittman would not give a reason for the decision to deny the Reporter’s contract photographer sideline access.
The Sweetwater Reporter is striving to provide families and students with quality coverage of local school sporting events. Until an agreement can be made with the superintendent, allowing a contracted photographer on the sidelines, the Reporter regrets that some editions will lack the quality photos that readers, students, players and relatives deserve.
If Sweetwater is going to grow as a community, it will take people working together for the good of everyone.
The Sweetwater Reporter wishes to thank all its readers for their patience.

The Roscoe Times is a rag of a paper and rarely has any local much less Roscoe news in it. Don King it must be you that is singing its praises here.

Back to the topic at hand, the local paper should be welcome at all sporting events. Silly stuff abounds in the Sweetwater Independant School District.

I agree that this isn't right; but find it interesting that nothing controversial is reported on that goes on in this town unless it is absolutly forced on The Sweetwater Reporter.
Until it hits home!

So I guess that means that if for some reason, what I cound never imagine; Fox Sports Southwest or Dave Campbell's sports show up the our strange super would deny them access too.

What a winner!!

To the Sweetwater Reporter editor, I say, go cry your eyes out somewhere else. I do not feel a bit sorry for you or the news staff. I have written numerous letters to the editor that never saw the light of day in this towns beloved newspaper. How does it feel to be left out? Bottom line is, the Sweetwater Reporter is a joke. They don't even cover significant local events and happenings. It is like a bunch of goons, oblivious to cover most of what is going on, and too lazy to cover the rest. The Sunday paper is printed on Friday for goodness sake! Colorado City and Roscoe have far more interesting newspapers for my money. For those who say funding (revenue) is the reason the paper is run this way; more people would subscribe if they were recieving somthing worth reading. Quality and substance goes hand and hand with subscribers.

Pitman needs to pull his academically unacceptable school district out of the gutter and quit worring about who is on the sidelines on Friday night. SISD is the disgrace of Nolan County. I'll keep my child at Highland.

Glad someone pointed that

Glad someone pointed that out. I picked up a Roscoe paper not too long ago and commented on how thin it was. when I got it home and read it there wasn't one story I skimmed over, every story had local and/or national significance or significance to me personally. there is hardly ever a story in the Sweetwater paper anymore that even makes me read past a headline

really

Don King quit it and actually get to Roscoe and find some news for that rag you call The Roscoe Times. You could not ever wash George's socks if George Parks was still alive.

Pittman has ruined SISD....just look at his ratings!

I couldn't agree more with the majority. Pittman makes VERY poor choices and then doesn't even have the backbone to defend his decisions. As an alumni of SISD, I find it completely disgusting that he does as he wants, has the school board under his thumb, and micromanages everything in SISD. This latest absurdity only goes to show how spineless this man is. I applaud the Sweetwater Reporter for the front page article. It's about time this community saw his corruption. I will be calling his office first thing Monday morning, and I hope that you all will too. It is time for a change in power. I miss David Welch!

instead of using your own

instead of using your own paper as a forum to complain I suggest you find use the free space you have to post a help wanted ad asking for people to send pictures for pay. I mean if your "contract photographer" isn't able to do it with that big 'ol fancy camera I bet someone can from the stands

Ridiculous

It's ridiculous for the newspaper to use a public forum like a newspaper to whine about what they see as a personal problem with pittman. the correct response would have been to use that fancy camera they have and that nice home stadium we have to get nice pictures from some new angles other than just the sideline. I mean, come on! you can't get a picture from the stands with a telescopic lens and you do this for a living? pay me and loan me that camera I've seen your "contract photographer" carrying on the sideline and I'll go to the game and get a couple pictures for you that will work just fine for the paper without a sideline pass.

Grow up Mr Midkiff this wasn't the time or place to air your grievances. maybe you should have written a letter to the editor!

So I guess that means that if for so reason, what I have no idea, Dave Campbell Sports or Fox Sports Southwest showed up I suppose Pittman would have them leave there cameras in the van????

He really is some piece of work!!

Delivering sub par education and working on killing sports too. What's next??

I believe the question here

I believe the question here is has the SISD restricted one particular individual (the contract photographer) from the side line or ALL employees from the Sweetwater Reporter from the side line? If it is in fact an individual who has been restricted there must be a specific reason and it could be that due to HIPA or other confidentiality reasons Mr. Pittman is unable to divulge such information.

it is hard to judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes. mr. pittman has spent most of his adult life diligently working to create a better educational experience for sisd students and employees. he has seemed like a stand up guy with the best interests of the students as his first priority. he deserves thanks and praises for that.

ron howell, too, has been covering the big red mustangs for longer than the current crop of mustangs has been alive. he deserves credit and respect for that.

times change, rules change, people change, communities change, good and bad, many times in ways that we have absolutely no control over. i guess what we can control is how we react to it. here's hoping we all can react by deciding what is important and what is not, and putting our attention and focus in the right places. go big red!

The Sweetwater Reporter is just as part of our community as the Sweetwater ISD and even though our paper is small it still has a strong impact on its readers and to the community. Yes sometimes the news is LAUGHABLE, but we are a small town and as a community we need to support our local paper. I pray that Mr. Pittman is not making these decisions based on past postings in the paper about the school district, because then he is making decisions based on personal feelings and not on what is best. We need to pray for unity for our town because it seems like there has been to much conflict within our community.

Two comments, Pittman denied acess to the reporter, True.....but these people in "upper mangement" are told what to say and do......thats why no reason was given.....because he don't know yet?........And as far as the reporter goes, think about the future of the newspaper to go towards electronic information vs. printing....if the postal service would have trademarked the word "mail" they would not be in such a economic bind now, just thoughts from a simple minded west texas man......Thanks

I don't know what anyone expects. I think it is about par for Pittman. Just a little man trying to boss everyone around. I am so glad I moved away!!!

I don't feel that this will make it past the 1st ammendment offenders so it like most of my others aren't. I thought we had free speech. GUESS NOT!!

Actually, I find it refreshing, a story about ice remaining on our roads when it's 105 degrees.

Somebody's got a sense of humor!

On the serious side, though, Texas High School Football may be able to ban prayer, but to ban the press?

I don't think so!

Sweetwater Reporter's statements about trying to provide quality coverage is laughable. This paper hasn't provided quality anything in years. Their insinuation that they need sideline access to help the Sweetwater community grow is even more laughable. If this is such a quality newspaper, I wonder why under their "Most Popular" articles is listed, "Nolan County Roads Remain Icy". Duh, how many 100 degree plus days have we had? Where are these icy roads. SR insults our intelligence!

I totally agree! When did it

I totally agree! When did it become acceptable for newspapers to stop reporting just the facts and insert their opionion into a non-editorial piece? Yes, the sports writers may be upset about Pittman's decision, but to whine about it on the front page just makes them look like immature idiots. I do not know what Pittman's reasons were behind his decision, but all the Reporter should have reported was that they weren't going to be allowed to take photos - not "If Sweetwater is going to grow as a community, it will take people working together for the good of everyone." If you were trying to shame Pittman into acquiescing with that statement, you only managed to shame yourselves.

Sideline access denied.

Is the Sweetwater Reporter the only one that has been denied access during the Mustangs home games? Are the TV stations also being denied. I would look into it. Cause 1 group should not be denied. If 1 then why not all?

This is such an EASY fix...just have an SISD employee send in pictures; I know Mrs. Smartt has sent in tons of positive pictures and stories that the paper use to run...not sure why the paper is not as "positive" and uplifting as it was a couple of years ago...hope it can get back to what it use to be...Let's not point fingers; let's find solutions....GO RED!!!!
