The playoff season will get started for Highland’s basketball teams on Friday.
Technically, the Highland girls (27-4) — who ended the regular season Feb. 5 as District 13-A, Division II champions with a perfect 10-0 mark — will have the only playoff game. The Lady Hornets take on Zephyr in the area playoffs at Clyde with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Highland boys make a much shorter trip today — to Roscoe —to play a district tiebreaker game against Hermleigh that will start at 4 p.m.
Highland and Hermleigh ended the season Tuesday with identical 7-3 records in District 13-A, Div. II, tying them for second place with Ira as champion. Friday’s game will determine play-off seeding with the winner going as the No. 2 seed and the loser as the No. 3 seed.
Highland and Hermleigh split in their two previous meetings. Hermleigh won the first game, 39-36, and Highland was a 37-31 winner in the rematch. Highland was in second place alone until Tuesday’s 60-27 loss to Ira, which dropped them into a second-place tie.
Highland’s girls, making their 12th straight playoff appearance, lost to Valley in a playoff warmup game on Saturday after going unde-feated in district play.
Despite the Lady Hornets’ 54-47 loss, they will be fav-ored to defeat a Zephyr squad that is 13-17 overall.
Highland trailed Valley 16-5 after the first quarter, but by just one point at the end of the next two periods.
