Plowboys to start district against Baird

After taking a week off, Roscoe starts district play by hosting Baird on Friday and hopes to get its up-and-down season back on track.
The Plowboys (1-2) have shown an explosive offense on occasion, but lost 19-0 two weeks ago to Miles in their most recent outing.
Baird is off to an 0-3 start this season, but two of its losses have been by a total of eight points.
Roscoe coach Jake Free-man said last week’s open date “came at the perfect time” for the Plowboys, in part because it allowed his team to heal injuries to some key players in getting ready for Baird.
“During the off week we went back and worked on a lot of fundamentals,” Free-man said, “getting back to correcting the mistakes we made during prior weeks while polishing up all three phases of the game.”
A win on Friday, which will also be Roscoe’s home-coming, would be “huge,” according to Freeman.
“If we can start the dis-trict 1-0 it will be a huge boost for our kids and also put us right where we need to be as far as controlling our own destiny. You never want to start 0-1 and have to battle to get back in the district race.”
Baird runs the wishbone and has a big, physical full-back and an aggressive line, Freeman said. “They want to line up and run right at you,” he noted.
“Our number one goal (on Friday) is to win. Defensively, we have to stop the run. If we can get them having to throw the ball, we will be in good shape. Offensively, we just have to execute and limit mistakes. We can not stop ourselves.”
Roscoe had a few individual bright spots against Miles. Sophomore quarterback Rafael Aguayo completed 6-for-9 throws for 71 yards in a backup role and another sophomore, line-backer Roman Acuna, had a team high 6 1/2 tackles. Aguayo, Kevin Lavalais and Shelton Toliver each had three pass receptions.
