Highland visits Ster. City, Blackwell at Jayton in six-man action

All three Nolan County area high school football teams face opponents tonight they had little success against in 2012, and only Roscoe plays at home.
The Plowboys — 0-1 after losing to De Leon 34-21 in their opener — entertain Irion County in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. Highland, also 0-1 after losing to Motley County 62-59, travels to Sterling City.
Finally, Blackwell — 1-0 after beat Westbrook 52-0 last week — goes to Jayton.
Those three opponents won last year’s games by an average of nearly 39 points, but things should be better this time around.
Roscoe’s 21 points in its season opener equalled its second-highest total from last year, when it went 2-8. Highland also did much better against Motley County in its opener than in 2012, when the Hornets were convincingly defeated 60-12.
Blackwell goes to Jayton hoping for a 2-0 start after closing out Westbrook at the half by the 45-point rule. It faces a team that won last year’s game 56-30.
Jayton is also 1-0 after winning its opener, but should be challenged by a Blackwell team that is much more confident than the first time the teams played.
The game is considered a tossup — Jayton is a 1-point favorite according to sixmanfootball.com. Jayton is ranked 18th in the web site’s poll this week; Blackwell is ranked 19th. However, the Hornets entered the season ranked No. 10 in Division II by Texas Football magazine — one spot behind district rival Robert Lee — while Jayton did not crack the magazine’s top 10.
Sterling City, Highland’s opponent, knows quite a bit about Jayton after losing to the Jaybirds, 54-7, in its opener. Because of that and Highland’s strong showing in its opener, Highland is ranked a 41-point favorite by sixmanfootball.com.
Roscoe faces an Irion County team that is 1-0 but just barely. The Hornets needed an extra period to beat Roby last week by a score of 26-20.
