Police station bids open at city meeting

Bids were opened for the construction of the new police station during Tuesday's Sweetwater City Commission meeting.
While seven bids were received, one bid was disqualified due to the fact that the company had no representation at a mandatory pre-bid meeting.
The remaining six bids were then briefly discussed, with the base bid cost noted and how long the work would take. Also mentioned were the costs of alternates, additions, deduction costs and costs of concrete.
Most of the six companies hail from the Metroplex area--Dallas, Arlington, Lewisville, Weatherford and Fort Worth. One company out of Midland submitted a bid as well.
For the base bid, the six prices ranged from the low end of $5.3 million all the way up to $6.7 million. The shortest time frame for the project was presented at 330 days, with the longest date coming in at 420 days.
After the bids were read, City Manager Eddie Brown made a recommendation that the architect have a chance to review the bids in detail, and then bring a recommendation back to the commission for consideration at a future meeting to be determined. Thus, the commissioners tabled the item.
Discussion on a new police station has been taking place since December 2012, when a contract was signed by the city with Wiginton Hooker Jeffry Architects, P.C. for work to be done toward a new police station.
At the February 2013 meeting, Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda presented preliminary concept plans for the new station. Most recently, the city commission authorized city staff to go out for bids during the May 2013 meeting.
