Powerlifting, tennis, s’ball set for today

February 13, 2014

With the high school basketball season over, other sports involving Sweetwa-ter High School start getting their turn in the spotlight today with a powerlifting meet and JV tennis tournament on tap locally, and the Lady Mustang softball team traveling to Colorado City for its season opener.
Today’s powerlifting meet will be the final one prior to regional competition early next month — March 1 in Fort Stockton for the girls and March 7 in Sundown for the boys. The most recent meet was held on Jan. 31 at Abilene Cooper. At that meet, the Sweetwater girls were second as a team and had one individual winner, Eliza Delgado in the 220-plus class. The boys were led by Jay Lomas, who won the 132-pound class.
The softball team’s game starts at 5 p.m. today, while the JV tennis tournament began at 8 a.m. and will be followed Friday by a varsity tennis tournament that also starts at 8. All matches will be at the middle school.
The top regional powerlifters next month will advance to state competition at either Abilene (boys) or Corpus Christi (girls).
The spring sports season gets into full swing over the next few days. SHS baseball team begins its season Monday at Abilene Cooper, and the SHS girls track season starts Saturday at Tex-as Tech’s indoor meet.
