AUSTIN — Concordia University head women’s basketball coach Rusty Rainbolt, who is a Sweetwater native, recently was named as the American Southwest Conference West Division Coach of the Year.
Rainbolt won the honor after leading Concordia to its first ASC championship and NCAA Division III tournament berth ever.
Rainbolt is in his first head coaching position at the collegiate level. He led the Tornados to their best season in school history in just his second season on the sidelines after serving as an assistant basketball coach at McMurry University.
Concordia set school records this year for overall victories (23) and confer-ence wins (18), and also made its first ASC postseason appearance since 2005. In Rainbolt’s two seasons, the Tornados are 37-15 — a .712 winning percentage — after going just 121-170 (.448) in the 12 years prior to his arrival.
Concordia also earned votes this season in the D3Hoops.com and WBCA national polls for the first time in school history.
