Gary Decker of Stamford was the speaker at this month's Lunch and Learn, "Reclaim Sweetwater." Decker successfully initiated a clean-up campaign in Stamford by partnering with the city, as well as businesses, civic groups and social clubs. Decker's goal was to clean up and clear away illegal dumping sites, run down and vacant buildings and abandoned cars. He asked the city council — not for money, but for support — which he received.
Half a Saturday, once a month, is clean-up day in Stamford. Specific projects are chosen each time and the campaign has been a huge success.
Decker came and spoke of his project in the hope that something similar will take hold in Sweetwater. "You have a great community and a huge opportunity," he told the crowd attending the Lunch and Learn. "You just have to show responsibility and be a part of the community."
