Nolan County athletes of-ficially began their partici-pation in high school regio-nal competition Monday, though only one athlete — Sweetwater’s Alex Castillo — saw action.
Castillo shot an 87 while competing as a boys meda-list at the Region I-3A golf tournament being held at San Angelo’s Bentwood Country Club. Castillo enters today’s final round 14 shots behind the medalist leader, Wylie’s Taylor Grant. Andrews (320) and Fort Stockton (325) are 1-2 in the team standings. The top two teams, as well as the top two individuals who are not on those teams, advance to the state tournament in Austin set for May 3-4.
The Sweetwater girls golf team and three Sweetwater tennis players will be participating in Region I-3A competition on Wednesday and Thursday.
The girls golf team — which consists of Alex Gomez, Rachel Hunt, Elise Lawrence, Haylee Stewart and Amy Witt — will play both of its rounds at San Angelo Country Club. The team qualified after placing second at the District 5-3A tournament. The three Sweetwater regional tennis participants consist of the mixed doubles pairing of Chris Hernandez and Madison Meneses, who will be joined by Heidi Taylor in girls singles at Texas Tech’s McLeod Center in Lubbock.
Regional track competition for athletes from Sweetwater, Roscoe, High-land and Blackwell will be held on April 27-28.
The latter three schools will send their athletes to Abilene and Sweetwater’s athletes go to Lubbock.
