Over the next two days, the future for Sweetwater High School golf athletes will be decided by how well they fare in their respective district events.
The Sweetwater boys golf team, currently in third place with a 639 total, hosts the third and final leg of its district tournament Mon-day at Sweetwater Country Club. Sweetwater needs to move up at least one spot in the final standings to earn a berth in the regional tournament in Lubbock, which is scheduled to be played April 20-21. Also, junior Ryan Mercer will try to qualify as a medalist for the third consecutive year. Mercer, who won the district medalist title as a sophomore, is currently in fourth place but has the best score among golfers not on one of the top two teams. That would qualify him for regionals again if he maintains his position and Sweetwater’s team misses a top-two spot.
The Sweetwater girls golf team hopes to maintain its second-place position when it completes its district tournament Tuesday at Snyder’s Western Texas College course. Sweetwater stands at 733 after two rounds of district play as it tries to earn a berth in the regional tournament at Lubbock that is scheduled to be played April 18-19.
Big Spring and Wylie are 1-2 in the boys district tour-nament, while Snyder leads the girls district tourney.
