Relay for Life celebrates 10 years in Sweetwater

May 13, 2011

Softball tournament and cook-off added to events

Ten years ago, Relay for Life was started by Janis McDowell in Sweetwater to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. June 2002 was the first Relay event and through it, the Sweetwater community raised $23,000. This year, Relay for Life will begin Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m. and end Saturday, June 4, at 6 a.m.
In honor of the ten year anniversary of Relay for Life, new activities are being added to this year’s all-night event. Through the generosity of Coach Steve Roberts, Mr. Terry Pittman and SISD, Relay has added an all-night co-ed softball tournament. The tournament will be played at the SISD softball fields.
Entry fee is only $100 for each 10-person team. Teams must have five females and five males and any extra players can be either gender. Entry fees will go to support Relay for Life. Only six spots are available for teams, so contact Mark Garcia at 235-6600 to sign your team up.
Relay for Life is also adding a cook-off this year. Categories include meat, baked goods and chili/stew. Entry fee is $5, with proceeds going to support Relay for Life. The competition will be judged and prizes awarded at 8 p.m. at Relay for Life. Contact Tique Hamilton at 236-6348 to register for the cook-off.
Throughout the night, there will be live bands, music, movies and much more. This year’s Relay for Life will be a celebration for the whole family. Come join the community at the Track Field as we raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. If you have any questions about Relay for Life or becoming more involved, contact Charlie Peek at 235-8426.
