Rezoning request considered at public hearing

June 13, 2013

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, a public hearing was held to consider a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission on a rezoning request.
According to Kirk Harris, the city services director, the P&Z met on May 28 and approved a recommendation requesting the rezoning of a tract of land from a “B” dwelling district to an “H” business district. The vacant area--commonly recognized as 606 to 710 Lamar in Sweetwater--was described as the West Half of Block 1, Lots 2 through 4 with the exception of the northwest corner of Lot 4 of the Ragland and Crane subdivision.
Harris added no opposition was received and that the church in the area, Evangelical Methodist Church on 700 Lamar, signed the request to support the zone change. Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham asked about the status of a lot owned by a man identified as Mr. Rivera, in which Harris noted that the area was excluded and no protest was heard.
With no public input heard on the matter, the hearing was closed and the commission returned to regular session. Thereafter, approval was given on the rezoning request.
