All motorcycle enthusiasts are summoned to ride for a good, green cause in June. The fourth annual Ride for Wind event, which benefits Women of Wind Energy, will be held in Sweetwater on June 22-23.
Shermco Industries founded the event and has sponsored it each year to help raise money for scholarships that promote women in the wind industry through the Women of Wind Energy organization.
âThis is a fun event that we are very proud to sponsor,â said Scott Meador, vice president of business development of Shermco Industries. âIf you like to ride, come on out. Itâs a great group of people who care about the clean energy and raising scholarship money for women who want to make a difference in the wind industry.â
The event will kick off on Friday night with a âMeet & Greetâ at Buckâs Steaks & Bar-B-Que in Sweetwater. On Saturday the riders will check-in and take off from the Holiday Inn Express Sweetwater. The ride will wind through beautiful West Texas country featuring stunning scenic views including wind turbine-topped mesas. Lunch will be provided at the Snyder Big Apple Deli, and the ride will conclude at the Lake Sweetwater Park where the prizes will be awarded. The Grand Prize is two round-trip tickets to the Caribbean or Mexico.
âOur organization depends on the generous support of sponsors and fund raising events like Ride for Wind to fund current initiatives like the 2012 Rudd Mayer Memorial Fellowships. The Rudd Mayer Fellowship is WoWEâs way supporting women in the academic community, college students and recent graduates, who are interested in expanding their knowledge and engaging in the wind energy industry.â said WoWE executive director, Kristen Graf.
The event costs $40 per rider and $20 for passengers, which includes the scenic wind farm ride, a t-shirt, lunch, the Poker Rally (grand prize for the winner) and pit stop snacks and beverages. Donations are happily accepted as well. For more information and registration for the event, visit www.rideforwind.net
The Women of Wind Energy mission is to promote the education, professional development, and advancement of women to achieve a strong diversified workforce and support a robust renewable energy economy. For more on the organization, visit the WoWE website at womenofwindenergy.org.
