The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began a major project to reconstruct 1.3 miles of Lamar Street (US Highway 70-Business) in Sweetwater this week.
The project will completely rehabilitate Lamar Street, which is one of the community’s major streets, from I-20 to Avenue B by rebuilding the road base, laying new asphalt and building concrete intersections to improve drainage. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs, gutters, retaining walls and upgraded signals.
The street’s two northbound lanes are now closed and traffic has been channeled to one lane in each direction on the west side of the road for part of Lamar Street. The work will be phased to accommodate businesses and residences, as well as school and special event schedules, as much as possible.
Work will not take place in front of the school until classes are dismissed next summer. The project is expected to be complete by spring of 2015.
Throughout construction, drivers and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution in the work zone. Shown are workers at the corner of Lamar and Avenue F on Tuesday morning.
