Roberson to be remembered at United Way golf tournament

March 22, 2013

The late Charles Roberson (shown) will be honored during the Nolan County United Way golf tournament on Saturday.

At the Nolan County United Way (NCUW) golf tournament tomorrow, participants will take part in a hobby they enjoy as they remember a dear friend who, for many years, joined them at the Sweetwater Country Club on many occasions.
This year's golf tournament/fundraiser is being held in honor of the late Charles Roberson, a former board member of the NCUW who passed away in July 2012 at the age of 85.
Roberson served on the NCUW board for over ten years. For three of those years, he worked alongside Lonna Walker, a past NCUW board member.
Walker recalled her time spent with Roberson on the board, citing how knowledgeable he was about the community he served. She had a high respect for his opinion on issues that were discussed among the board and remembered how kind and courteous Roberson was to others.
He was also dedicated to the city of Sweetwater through his involvement with various civic activities and organizations, such as the Sweetwater Goodfellows, the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, the County-City Library Board and as a Red Coat Ambassador of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
In addition, Roberson was a faithful member of the Greater Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer and on the church's financial committee.
Furthermore, he was a member of the Sweetwater Country Club. One of Roberson's golf buddies, Jack Lawrence, stated that for a few years, about once or twice a week, he would play golf with Roberson. They became close friends and Lawrence recalled Roberson being a "fabulous guy."
Tomorrow, Lawrence will be joined by fellow golf companions Homer Taylor, Glen Bennett and Fred Waldrop to play in Roberson's honor. The group will be sponsored by the Nolan County United Way.
For the memorial tournament, a quote on the promotional banner and dedication plaque has been included, which states:
There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow men. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak. There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well. ~ Walter Reuther
In Loving Memory of our dear friend and board member and his many years of service to Nolan County.
"We feel that it sums up Charles' dedication and diligence in supporting the agencies and residents of Nolan County," said Wendy Smartt, the executive director of the NCUW.
Funds raised from the golf tournament will benefit the nine local agencies supported by the NCUW: Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC), Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts, SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program), Sweetwater BackPack Buddies, West Texas Child Advocacy Center (WTCAC) and the Women’s Resource Center.
