Roscoe and Blackwell start out with tough road contests

Roscoe heads to play Albany in season opener tonight, August 26

The Roscoe Plowboys and Blackwell Hornets are both entering this season with several young players who have little or no varsity experience, but neither team will be getting a break in their opener.
Roscoe, which has just four seniors on its 31-player roster, travels to Albany tonight for its opener that will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Blackwell — which won’t have any seniors on its 14-player roster — will wait until Saturday to begin its sea-son. The Hornets will be traveling to McCamey to face a good Water Valley squad — one that is led by former Highland coach Karry Owens — at 3 p.m. as part of the second annual West Texas Six-Man Shootout that features five games on Saturday.
Roscoe is a perennial playoff team, but the Plowboys will have their hands full with an Albany squad that has a number of key players back after getting to the state quarterfinals last season.
Roscoe has a full slate of tough foes prior to district. Next up will be Hawley on Sept. 1 at Sweetwater’s Sammy Baugh Classic.
Blackwell is taking on a Water Valley squad which is coming off a 10-1 season and will be favored to win District 8, Division I. Blackwell is a member of District 8, Division II. The game will be the first time that Blackwell’s Nathan Hayes has coached against Owens since he left Highland this past spring.
