While Sweetwater has one more game plus an open date and Blackwell and Highland are a month away, Roscoe officially begins its â€śsecond seasonâ€ť today when the Plowboys host Baird in their District 7-1A, Division II opener at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe went 1-2 in non-district under new coach Jake Freeman, but a win tonight would equal its victory total for all of last year. One of the Plowboysâ€™ two wins a year ago was in their district opener with Baird as Roscoe prevailed 14-0.
Freeman said getting a win tonight is important.
â€śIf we can start the district 1-0 it will be a huge boost for our kids and also put us right where we need to be as far as controlling our own destiny,â€ť he said. â€śYou never want to start 0-1 and have to battle to get back in the district race.â€ť
Roscoe was off last week after completing non-district play with a 19-0 loss to Miles.
â€śDuring the off week we went back and worked on a lot of fundamentals,â€ť said Freeman. The Plowboys, he added, got back to â€ścorrec-ting the mistakes we made during prior weeks while polishing up all three phases of the game (offense, defense and special teams).â€ť
Sweetwater is also at home tonight to face Brownwood in its final tuneup for 4-3A action that begins Oct. 11. The team has an open date next week. Highland is at Trent and Blackwell plays at Blanket. The teamsâ€™ annual six-man showdown will be at Blackwell on Oct. 11.
