Roscoe gets a rematch with Moguls in playoffs

November 11, 2010

Roscoe’s Anthony Castor and Adan Aguayo block for quarterback Caden Smith (with ball) during last week’s final regular season game against Rotan. Smith, the Plowboys’ quarterback, has a team-high 1,305 yards rushing. Roscoe takes on Munday in a Class 1A bi-district playoff today at Jim Ned High School.

Although this has been a year of transition, one thing hasn’t changed at Roscoe — the Plowboys are once again in the playoffs.
However, first-year coach Jonathan Haseloff’s team is looking for a big change on the gridiron today when they face Munday’s Moguls in bi-district at 7:30 p.m. at Jim Ned High School.
Roscoe lost a 31-0 deci-sion to Munday in a non-district game in September, but the contest was closer than the final score might indicate.
Roscoe trailed just 7-0 at halftime and 14-0 after three quarters until the Moguls exploded for 17 points in a span of 2:26 in the fourth period to ice the contest, the last points coming on a 29-yard fumble return.
The Plowboys will have to find a way to somehow slow Munday’s potent 1-2 combination of Dee Paul and Kyler Urbanczyk to reverse that result today. Paul rushed for 221 yards and two scores back in September. He has 1,351 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns this season, while Urbanczyk has rushed for 1,051 yards and 11 TDs.
Munday averages 303 yards rushing and just 75 through the air, while Roscoe has a slightly more balanced attack — 196 rushing and 85 passing.
The Plowboys will likely need a big game from their 6-3, 250-pound quarterback, Caden Smith, to knock off the Moguls. Smith has run for 1,305 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also throwing for 851 yards and five scores. In addition, he leads the team with 109 tackles from his linebacking position on defense.
“Caden needs to have a good game,” Haseloff said. “We need to get it in his hands as much as possible and spread it to the other guys as well. They are one of the quickest teams we’ve faced, so we have to keep the ball away from them and avoid turnovers.”
Roscoe hopes to have fullback Edgar Gallegos, who is second on the team with 438 yards rushing, back tonight after sitting out last week with an ankle injury. Caden Smith’s favorite passing targets are Anthony Castor (16 catches) and Collin Smith (15 catches). Linebackers Landon Jones and Gallegos have 67 and 52 tackles, re-spectively, and end Michael Massey has 49 stops.
