Roscoe Plowboys football preview

A 14-0 victory over Baird this past week did more than just end a long Roscoe losing streak that stretched back to the end of the 2010 season. It also put the Plowboys (1-3 overall) in the top half of the District 7-1A, Division II standings.
Now that Roscoe has finally tasted success, coach Jonathan Haseloff’s team hopes to build on it and gets to do so tonight when it hosts Cross Plains (1-0, 2-2). The Buffaloes are also coming off a win after their 26-0 victory over Gorman last Friday.
Today’s winner will be in no worse than a tie for first place with five games left to play. Preseason favorites Albany and Hamlin are also off to 1-0 starts in the district.
Highland is also trying to stay on a winning roll. Coach Jeff Shelton’s Hornets (3-2) bring a three-game winning streak into Saturday’s home game with Lueders-Avoca (2-3) after this past week’s thrilling, end-of-the-game 30-25 win over previously-unbeaten Trent.
The winning TD came on Ron Covington’s 12-yard run as time expired and made Highland one of only two schools, along with Ira, in District 7 Six-Man with a winning record.
Blackwell (2-3) will try to get back in the win column and, like Roscoe and Highland, also celebrate its homecoming when it plays Saturday against 0-5 Moran. Blackwell has been on the short end of back-to-back close games the past two weeks with Trent (44-50) and Blanket (44-52) after having leads over both teams in the fourth quarter.
Still, Blackwell has alrea-dy doubled its win total of a year ago, and only one team in its district has a better record so far. Blackwell and Highland will be playing their last games before facing each other next week at Highland.
