With a 4-4 record, Roscoe has already doubled its win total from last season.
But an even bigger goal â making the playoffs â is still in sight for coach Jake Freemanâs team. And right now, the Plowboys are on a two-game roll with wins over Ranger (46-36) and Gorman (71-8) that have put them in a three-way tie for third place with Cross Plains and Roby. All three are 3-2 in District 7-1A, Div. II with two games left.
Roscoe has a big challenge Friday as it will host district co-leader Hamlin, which is 5-0. However, the Plowboys arenât cowered. âOur playersâ confidence is the highest it has been all year,â Freeman said. âThey have experienced some success and believe they can win. They feel they have a great chance to win on Friday.â
As impressive as Roscoeâs season-high 71 points were against Gorman, Freeman was also pleased with the improved play of the def-ense. After giving up a first-quarter TD, Roscoe proceeded to outscore Gorman 71-0 the rest of the game.
âWe took huge strides on Friday night,â the first-year head coach said. âThe kids played very well and executed well in all phases of the game. We scored defensively and had great production on special teams.â
The defensive standouts included Max Nemir (10 tackles, two for a loss and a forced fumble returned for a TD) and Roman Acuna (11 tackles, four for a loss). QB Cutter Davila threw four scoring passes â two to Jesus Leanos and one apiece to Shelton Toliver and Rafael Aguayo. He also rushed for two other touchdowns. Brayden Beal, who was recently moved up to the varsity, also had a strong game with a team-high 130 yards rushing and a TD.
Hamlin, tied for first with Albany, beat Cross Plains 35-7 last week. âHamlin is a very talented team,â said Freeman. âTyrone Johnson is one of the best backs in the area and is very dangerous if he gets loose. We must contain him and limit the big play. We know he is going to get some yardage but we must corral him and gang tackle. Offensively, we need to continue to execute our game plan. Our offensive line has done a great job the last few weeks protecting our quarterback and that must continue for us to have success.â
