It was almost exactly one year ago when Roscoe gave Jonathan Haseloff his first win as the team’s head coach with a 19-6 victory over Hawley.
Today in the opener of the Sammy Baugh Classic at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl, the Plowboys (0-1) try to duplicate that feat when they face Hawley (1-0). The kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe fell to Albany 57-7 in its season opener, as the Lions — ranked 10th in Class A — rushed for 427 yards on just 28 attempts while limiting the Plowboys to only 188 total yards. Both teams stuck almost exclusively with their ground games, attempting a total of four passes with just one completion. Roscoe did have some success with its running game against the Lions as Eric Padilla had 70 yards on 19 carries and Luke Rovig ran eight times for 54 yards, inclu-ding a touchdown.
The Bearcats, the first of two Class 2A foes, won big (43-7) in last week’s opener when they traveled to DeLeon.
Hawley, like Roscoe and Albany, stayed with its running game as its 195 yards rushing accounted for its offensive total. The Bearcats got nearly half of their yards on a 95-yard TD run by Bryce Devore.
