ROSCOE — Roscoe’s of-fense exploded for 39 first-half points in Friday’s home opener en route to a 45-26 victory over Irion County.
The Plowboys, who ex-ceeded 21 points only one time last season, reached that plateau in the first minute of the second quarter in evening its record at 1-1.
Roscoe led just 13-12 after Irion County used an interception return to score on the first play of the period. But the Plowboys got even following the kickoff when quarterback Cutter Davila – who threw for 320 yards in the game — fired a 65-yard touchdown to Shelton Toliver and then ran over a 2-point conversion to increase the lead to 21-12.
It was a familiar sight all night. Davila threw six TD passes — four of them to Toliver, who caught 10 pas-ses for 196 yards. Toliver had scoring receptions of 12 and 27 yards later on in a 26-point second quarter, and found paydirt again on a 32-yard reception in the third quarter for Roscoe’s only second-half score.
Vincent Pantoja scored Roscoe’s first two TDs on a 3-yard run and an 8-yard pass reception, and Davila also threw a 10-yard scor-ing pass to Jesus Leanos.
Leanos caught four passes for 44 yards; Rafael Aguayo had five catches for 57 yards; and Pantoja caught three passes for 23 yards.
The pass defense, meanwhile, held Irion County to a 5-of-18 performance through the air and both Jesus Leanos and Javier Leanos had interceptions. Zack Longoria had five tac-kles, two for a loss, while Aguayo had 4 1/2 tackles and Sebastian Benivamondez had four stops. Roscoe had a limited ground game, with Pantoja’s 16 yards on five carries leading the way.
Roscoe will try for its second straight victory this Fri-day, when it goes to Miles for its final non-district contest of the season.
