J.B. Roberts, the Rotary International Chairman of Hunger Plus, will be making a special presentation on feeding the hungry at a meeting held by the Rotary Club on Monday, Feb. 7, at noon. It will be held at Texas State Technical College Sweetwater campus in the banquet room located north of the cafeteria. Guests are welcome to attend the Monday lunch meeting and hear Roberts' presentation on Hunger Plus.
Hunger Plus, founded in 1998, strives to feed the hungry within the United States and around the world and has sent food to every continent except Antarctica. Roberts has served as the Hunger Plus chairman since the program's inception.
Roberts grew up in Plainview and is a sixth generation Texas native. In 1950, he graduated from Baylor University in Waco with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree. The next year, in 1951, Roberts received a direct commission in the United States Air Force in the Office of Special Investigation (OSI).
Roberts' involvement in the Rotary Club began locally in Plainview in 1958. The Plainview Rotary Club, located in District 5730, received the honor of being recognized as “Outstanding Club of the Year”; Roberts was named as "Rotarian of the Year" in the district as well.
During his time with Rotary, Roberts has served in many areas with a number of RI presidents. In 1997-98, Roberts served as Governor of District 5370. He has also worked alongside RI president, Rick King, as the International Chair of the Hunger Task Force in 2001-02. In 2002-03, he was the Hunger and Poverty Advisor to RI president Bhichai Rattakul. Roberts also served on the committee for Presidential Conference under RI president Jonathan Majiyagbe in 2003. That same year through 2004, he served on the World Community Service International Committee.
Roberts has also earned numerous awards during his service with Rotary. In 1999, he received the Rotary Foundation's Citation for Meritorious Service. He has also received recognition from Rotary International, as he was awarded the "Service Above Self" award in 2004 and the Distinguished Service Award from The Rotary Foundation in 2005.
However, Roberts' involvement also spans throughout his community and the nation. He teaches an adult Sunday school class and is active in Gideons International. Roberts has also served as director and president of various civic organizations at the local and state levels. In 2006, he received the John Ben Shepperd Texas Leadership Award as Outstanding Local Leader.
Nationally, Roberts has been a member of various organizations, including the Sons of American Revolution, Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Jamestown Society, Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Alamo Defenders Descendents Association. Also, the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration presented Roberts with the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award in May 2007 for having a private pilot’s license for over 50 years as well as for furthering the cause of aviation safety.
He and his wife, Ramona, are major donors and benefactors, serving as a personal example of the Rotary motto "Service Above Self". Rotary International (RI) serves as one of the largest humanitarian and philanthropic organizations in the world.
