Complimentary snack part of community outreach initiative during Sweetwater Independence Day parade

For the second year in a row, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be celebrating Independence Day by giving away free watermelon slices on the hospital lawn. This is set to take place along with the Sweetwater Independence Day parade on July 4, from 10 a.m. until noon.
“Nothing says summer like cold, juicy watermelon slices,” said Donna Boatright, administrator at RPMH. “Last year, our community outreach team decided to provide this refreshing treat for the community and it was such a success that we decided to continue the project this year during the parade.”
You might not think too much about the nutritional value of watermelons, but this fruit is packed with many vitamins. According to Brenda Hollis, dietary director at RPMH, watermelon is a great snacking alternative to energy bars and other sugary snacks on the market.
“Watermelon is a rich source of vitamin A, B and C,” Hollis explained. “These antioxidants help maintain eye health, strengthen your immune system and boost your metabolism.”
Research has found that watermelon has the highest concentration of lycopene of any fruit or vegetable. Lycopene is an antioxidant that is known to help fight many cancers, including heart disease and prostate cancer.
Served cold or at room temperature, watermelon is the perfect treat for any summer activity or event.
"Be sure to bring the family by RPMH after the Independence Day parade to enjoy this nutritious snack while supplies last."
